Grand canyon tours from las Vegas:
facts you need to know about the grand canyon

Firstly some facts about the Grand Canyon:

Click here to find out where the Grand Canyon is located
  • The oldest rocks in the Grand Canyon are over 1,800 million years old (seeing as the age of the earth is estimated as being 4,550 million years old these rocks have been around for nearly 40% of that time). This is the rock found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
  • The rims of the canyon, which is the paler Kaibab limestone, are relatively young in comparison... only around 270 million years old!
  • The Grand Canyon has been carved out of these rocks over the last 5-6 million years. This almost seems quick when you think about how old these rocks are.
Creation of the Grand Canyon
  • The collision of two tectonic plates 70 million years ago led to the formation of an area raised over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) known as the Colorado Plateau (or Colorado Plateaus Province). This provided the topography from which the Grand Canyon was sculpted.
  • The Colorado River can be seen as being responsible for the formation of the Grand Canyon. Through the force of the water itself, together with the sand and gravel the river carries it has been able to cut down through the numerous layer of rock to form the canyon. This erosion process continues today, although the Grand Canyon dam now controls the volume of water flowing through the canyon.
